Temperature Controlled Polarimeters
Bellingham + Stanley’s ADP600 Series digital polarimeters are high accuracy instruments that measure optical rotation and are available as single, dual and multiple wavelength derivatives that cover the visible spectrum as well as up to four decimal places in the highly sensitive ultra-violet region. This capability of measuring across the broad spectrum makes the instrument ideal for use by scientists wishing to measure chiral compounds and other optically active substances in the chemical, pharmaceutical and food sectors as well as for those in academic research.
XPC Temperature Control
Xylem’s patented XPC technology directly controls the temperature of the sample chamber, allowing for fast temperature stabilisation that is more representative of the sample than the air surrounding it. Used in conjunction with the correct sample tube, XPC technology intelligently adjusts the algorithm so that the stabilisation process is quick and efficient based on the mass of the sample being stabilised. The input length is also used for Specific Rotation or concentration METHODs where tube length forms part of the result.
Thanks to XPC temperature technology ADP600 Series polarimeters, much like ADP450 polarimeters, run quieter than many competitive digital polarimeters. In part this is due to not needing to run big, noisy fans to cool an entire polarimeter chamber. This quieter operation is especially useful when working in smaller laboratories or when sharing workspace with others.
Don’t require temperature control for a specific sample or when using temperature compensation methods? Simply turn the XPC temperature control off and you’re ready to measure without stabilisation – saving you a little bit of time and energy.
The ADP600 Series Polarimeters have two pre-set operating temperatures being 20 and 25 °C in accordance with European and United States Pharmacopoeia respectively and other user temperatures between 20 and 30°C may be configured via the instrument user interface.
Polarimeter Sample Tubes
ADP600 Series Polarimeters accept standard size (30mm collar in accordance with ICUMSA) XPC or special low volume leur taper polarimeter tubes facilitating measurement across optical path lengths between 5 and 200m with tube diameters from 5 to 8mm being readable. For samples containing highly acid solvents such as hydrochloric acid (HCl), glass polarimeter tubes with PEEK end caps are available. Optional lids may be easily fitted to the ADP600 Series Polarimeters, facilitating sample tube entry and exit.
Touch-screen Display & Methods
Integral to operational simplicity is the full colour, high definition, touch-screen graphical user interface. A menu structure featuring a METHODS system makes for one-touch calibration and instrument configuration; especially where the specific rotation of several samples is being analysed over a wide range of concentrations, path lengths, temperatures and wavelengths.
A “Mean Method” is also available, allowing a number of readings to be taken from a production batch with the mean being calculated and recorded once the experiment has been completed. The Mean Method is ideal for pharmaceutical applications where compliance with pharmacopoeia is required. The METHODS system is also very similar to that of the wide ranging RFM900 Series of high accuracy Peltier controlled refractometers that are in common use throughout the flavours, fragrance, chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
Connectivity & Security
RFID user clearance comes as standard in the ADP600 Series Polarimeters, which was first introduced in the ADP400 Series Polarimeters. This simple but effective technology gives users unique access to the instrument via a personalised key fob, and allows for certain settings to be tailored to individuals (or predetermined groups). Using RFID and individual users allows for a detailed audit trail of the polarimeter’s use, including aspects including readings taken and calibration routines.
Please note that RFID is only available on low and medium security settings as the highest level of security requires the most stringent access control. To help with the latter, new “Server sync software” may be used to align instrument passwords with server passwords. This software is included with all ADP600 models.
ADP600 Series Polarimeters have an extensive interfacing capability. Four USB ports provide excellent connectivity to, for example, convenient remote keyboards, printers, barcode readers and LIMS or PC, whilst the Ethernet connection may be used for networking as well as remote diagnostics or certification.
Additionally the ADP600 Series Polarimeters feature a secure “print to PDF” function that may be configured to operate in secure environments in accordance with FDA regulation 21 CFR Part 11 and importantly, the ADP600 Series polarimeters meet all of the requirements, including wavelength directives of British, United States, European and Japanese Pharmacopoeia.
You can learn more about the ADP600 Series’ ability to comply with 21 CFR Part 11 in the following video.
